Why Do We Need a Camera at the Front Door?
Answering the front door of your home has evolved with the ages with how we live and interact in our neighborhoods.
In past neighborhoods without air conditioning, people stayed outside just to keep cool during the summer. You knew your neighbors and was aware of strangers that posed a threat. Neighbors, the milkman, a preacher, or any visitor had a certain way he had to approach the home especially when the door was closed. In an innocent age unexpected visitors were welcome.
Today, residential crime has increased, homeowners are left with the burden of protecting themselves from home invasions, property theft and vandalism. The police force of the past that would typically drive through neighborhoods has decreased, certain crimes even when reported to 911 doesn’t always get an immediate response with law enforcement. Some neighborhoods may have a crime watch system but can’t be always there when an event happens.
According to The Department of Justice:
1. On average, over 1 million burglaries occur in the United States each year.
The Department of Justice conducts studies specifically related to home burglaries and a study in 2017 reported that over 1.7 million burglaries in the United States.
Of those 1.7 million home burglaries, 424,886 took place during the day. Most burglars assume that inhabitants will not be home during the day and usually committed their criminal activity during this time of day. In fact, most home burglaries happen between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm and last eight to 10 minutes. First thing they do is knock on the door to see if anyone is home and to see if you have a dog!
According to statistics, a decreasing number of home burglaries have been reported between 2018 and 2019. According to a 2019 Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report, they decreased by 9.5% during this time period. However, there is now an increase from 2020-2021 in Residential Crime in the United States.
2. According to several public sources a surprising 76% of homeowners don’t have a home security system.
3. Experts say that around 72% of homes in the U.S. will be broken into in the next 20 years.
Now Home Security has become a very important feature so homeowners can fight these statistics and be aware of everything that is taking place whether at home or away. It wasn’t affordable at first with mostly the wealthy having the systems in place. Systems included a DVR, Cameras set up around the perimeter of the home, but no way to be able to monitor while away and get notifications at that time other than an alarm sounding and police being called by the system or neighbors.
Today, with all the new current technology many companies have very affordable systems with easy setup, access controls, 24-7 monitoring via cellphone apps with indoor and outdoor cameras at full HD Quality.
How do you choose from the current technology? You need to ask the question, what exactly do you need to feel safe in your own home?
Notifications seems to be the key. If someone walks up to your door and rings the doorbell, what is the response from the camera at the front door? If you are home, you will NEED to see who is there first before opening the door.
Most Smartphone cameras will ring your cellphone “if” you have the app notifications “approved” through your settings. When you are away you simply answer the call and speak to them letting them know you are there but not available. Some Smartphone Cameras will be recording the event at the time and store in the “Cloud” or on an SD Card for viewing in the future in case of an event.
Now when you are home it’s sometimes not easy to do this, why? You might be actually “on your phone” at the time when someone rings the doorbell. You put the caller on “hold”, talk to the guest but still have someone on “hold” or you accidently hang up on them.
Another problem what if your phone is dead or you can’t find your phone? Then you answer the “old-fashioned” way leaving your security behind.
